DON'T CHASE HAPPINESS

Happiness is a complex emotion that cannot be pursued directly. Pursuing happiness as an end goal often leads to disappointment and depression. Instead, happiness can be pursued indirectly through the SPIRE model: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, and Emotional well-being. Each element contributes to a happy life and can increase the likelihood of anti-fragility or post-traumatic growth.

Spirituality involves finding meaning and purpose in life, which can help overcome barriers. Physical well-being is essential, and stress recovery is crucial. Intellectual well-being involves curiosity, asking questions, and deeply engaging with the material. Relational well-being is vital and involves spending quality time with people who care about us. Emotional well-being involves embracing painful emotions and cultivating pleasurable ones, such as gratitude.

Happiness is a continuum and a process, and embracing painful emotions is a crucial part of it. Through the elements of the SPIRE model, pursuing happiness indirectly can help us raise our overall levels of happiness and increase the likelihood of growing from hardship. Happiness is not just about pleasure; it is about our whole being. By understanding and embracing the elements of the SPIRE model, we can pursue happiness and lead a fulfilling life.
