THE SCIENCE OF FLOW

Friday, May 14, 2021

Flow is a state of total absorption and rapt attention in which every action flows effortlessly and seamlessly. It is achieved when a task's challenge slightly exceeds our skill set. To prepare ourselves for flow, we must become comfortable with being uncomfortable, practice distraction management, and use flow triggers. The most basic flow trigger is complete concentration, and dopamine triggers, such as novelty, unpredictability, complexity, and risk-taking, effectively drive motivation and focus. Intrinsic motivators are curiosity, passion, purpose, autonomy, and mastery. These motivators are designed to be built into one another in a specific sequence. Humans are built for peak performance, and flow can also occur in a collective version called group flow. Studies show that people who score high for these characteristics also score high for overall well-being and life satisfaction.
