THE SECRET HABITS THAT CONTROL YOUR LIFE

Friday, May 14, 2021

Habits have gotten a bad reputation in psychology because they are often associated with animals, particularly dogs, who are seen as too limited to apply to human performance. However, research has shown that people act on habits much more than they know. Friction, which includes distance, time, and effort, is essential in determining what behaviors become a habit.

Changing habits is more complex than exerting self-control and willpower. Our patterns are stored in a memory system we can't access, and we can't fuss with it. Habits form associations between contexts, and rewards play a crucial role in repeating behaviors and developing practices. Therefore, it's essential to work with what's around us and create an environment that makes it easier to achieve our goals.

Rituals have a habit component, and they can give us a sense of control and confidence. Professional athletes are good examples of people who use conventions effectively to perform well. When we are in environments where we know what to do and feel comfortable doing them, we can effectively multitask and make sense of our world. Therefore, understanding and mastering our habits is vital for achieving our goals and improving our lives.
